ROM (Read Only Memory) Chips

ROM is an acronym for Read-Only Memory. It refers to computer memory chips containing permanent or semi-permanent data. Unlike RAM, ROM is non-volatile; even after you turn off your computer, the contents of ROM will remain. Almost every computer comes with a small amount of ROM containing the boot firmware.

CPU (central processing unit)

Also called a central processor, main processor or just processor, is the electronic circuitry within a computer that executes instructions that make up a computer program. The CPU performs basic arithmetic, logic, controlling, and input/output operations specified by the instructions in the program.

The CPU, Central Processing Unit, or simply processor, is the main chip in a computer responsible for carrying out all tasks. It’s responsible for telling all the other components in a computer what to do, according to the instructions it is given by the programs (software) running on that computer. In fact, CPUs exist in many kinds of device apart from computers. If something can run programs, chances are it will have a CPU. For example, phones and TVs have CPUs inside them. In modern computers, and especially in smartphones, the CPU may sit on the same physical chip as other components. Most modern computer CPUs share a chip with a computer’s graphics electronics (that decides what appears on your monitor). An example of this is the Intel Core i7-7700K.cpu

Input Devices

Keyboards

In 1954 at MIT, researchers begin experimenting with direct keyboard input to computers. Until then, computer users fed their programs into a computer using punched cards or paper tape. Douglas Ross, a Teaching Assistant in the Mathematics Department, wrote a memo advocating direct access in the beginning of 1955. He believed, that a Flexowriter (an electrically-controlled typewriter) connected to an MIT computer could function as a keyboard input device due to its low cost and flexibility. Thus in 1955 MIT’s Whirlwind, becomes the first computer in the world to allow its users to enter commands through a keyboard and confirmed how useful and convenient a keyboard input device could be.
