The use of radio media to present important news in different centuries

History

The class will split into three groups, selection of an era will be by pick out of a hat, the groups will design a radio announcement for their era using the technology available or style at that time.

Students will investigate how news was communicated in the 20th Century, Step one will be to write a news sheet declaring an outbreak or start of a war, this will be read to the groups as a newsroom presentation.

The students will present a sample of a news bulleting from the era nominated and write two short news flashes


1. One using propaganda to influence the people and encourage people reaction,


2. The other without any bias or sensation.


A short description of how the news would have communicated to others should be made. One student will be appointed Editor, another the News reader.


Students should investigate how technology of the day was used to influence social opinion.

5 minutes
Introduction and group selection
15 minutes

Group investigation

Students will be allowed 15 minutes to research their topic and will be provided with links to web sites and with materials of the period.

15 minutes

Group preparation

Students given 15 minutes preparation time and will present and prepare their findings to the class.

10 minutes
Group discussion next session. Students will then analyse different methods that could have been employed for different social effects, i.e. panic news, constrained news, information news, sensationalising the news.
5 minutes
Conclusion - Students will then discuss the social implications of each presentation and how this form of media affected those involved. Students will consider the next form of news media - radio
